Butler’s Science, Technology, and Society Program (STS) provides students rich experience in the sciences, social sciences, and humanities through a rigorous yet flexible curriculum and practical application. People have affected the development of this technology by demanding features such as larger screens, touch capabilities, and internet accessibility. One such development was the rise of “science, technology, and society” programs, which are also—confusingly—known by the STS acronym.
Because of many indirect as well as direct connections between science and technology, the research portfolio of potential social benefit is much broader and more diverse than would be suggested by looking only at the direct connections between science and technology.
The program’s primary aim is to build bridges between the two cultures of science and the humanities and to develop a common language so that they can better understand and speak to one another-and ultimately to grasp that they belong to a single common culture.
As the world around us grows more complex, so too does our need to take care of it.
