Science, Technology and Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary field that studies the conditions under which the production, distribution and utilization of scientific knowledge and technological systems occur; the consequences of these activities upon different groups of people. Sindi has a Ph.D. in biotechnology from Newnham College, Cambridge, which she obtained in 2001; she was the first Saudi woman to be accepted at Cambridge University to study the field of biotechnology, and the first woman from any of the Arab States of the Persian Gulf to complete a doctoral degree in the field.

Program officers manage specific research efforts, but unique to ONR, program officers can pursue an idea from discovery to deployment because they have access to all three phases of developmental funding: basic research (6.1), applied research (6.2) and advanced technology development (6.3).

We have more than 40 faculty affiliates across Tufts University—from anthropology, biology, classics, education, engineering, history, mathematics, music, philosophy, physics, political science, urban and environmental policy and planning, and many more.

Our range of degree programs, along with an emphasis in research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students, are available with the vision of preparing students to successfully enter fields in health care, research, education, manufacturing, environmental science, engineering, and business, among others, as outstanding contributors to their communities and professions.

CSTEPS does research to understand the processes, institutions, incentives and organizations that affect the development and production of science. NCSES collects its own data on science, technology, and innovation (STI) activities and also incorporates data from other agencies to produce indicators that are used for monitoring purposes – including comparisons among sectors, regions, and with other countries – and for identifying trends that may require policy attention and generate research needs.

The Office for History of Science and Technology is affiliated with faculty from many departments, including Berkeley’s History Department. The works described in Heralds of Science continue to stand as major milestones in the history of science and technology.

Science, Technology & Society Studies Certificate Program


The role of science and technology from the space research to the identification and exploration of the mineral resources is highly commendable. Only courses specifically approved by the STS Program may be counted toward the minor. Controversies such as modified foods, stem cell research are the issues that have brought policy makers and scientists together to have a way forward on this. Our aim is to understand how technology is used by government organizations to improve public services, governance processes and environmental outcomes.

Students majoring in STS are well prepared to pursue graduate study in related field and also have a solid foundation for work as science journalists, policy researchers and advisers, science educators, design and business consultants, and advocates of change around issues such as gender and science, renewable energy and the social effects of the information revolution.

This collateral set of courses should be chosen in consultation with the program director to provide the foundation needed to engage STS studies issues in which that discipline is implicated. The Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program (STPP) is a research, teaching, and outreach program of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

Students electing the minor must take a set of courses totaling a minimum of 15 hours that includes STS 011 Technology and Human Values or IDEA 011 IDEAS Seminar I and IDEA 012 IDEAS Seminar II and electives chosen from the list of all courses eligible for STS studies.

With the subject of immigration reform being a hot topic in Washington, there has been much talk of expanding the opportunities for graduates with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (“STEM”) to obtain a green card. Environmental technology employs economically viable and eco-friendly technologies, to apply sustainable development as a solution to environmental issues, by finding ways to save and protect the environment, and inflict minimal harm to natural resources.

A minimum of 3 courses in a chosen focus track (Science; Technology; Medicine). Technosocial systems 38 – people and technologies that combine to work as heterogeneous but functional wholes. Science and technology have important connections to literature, philosophy, religion, art, economics, and to social and political history.

Exhibit the development of specific skills related to the science, technology, health and society disciplines, particularly the use of math and science to solve problems in concentrations such as health, natural resource use and conservation, sustainability, information science, and engineering.
