Science, Technology, And Math

Oceanography, one of the important four branches of Earth Science , is the study of the oceans. Students electing the minor must take a set of courses totaling a minimum of 15 hours that includes STS 011 Technology and Human Values or IDEA 011 IDEAS Seminar I and IDEA 012 IDEAS Seminar II and electives chosen from the list of all courses eligible for STS studies.

Key issues of interest include the study of the processes of technological innovation in the fields of energy and environment and the design of policies and institutions can shape and accelerate the development and deployment of technologies to promote energy access and energy security, to mitigate, adapt and reduce vulnerability to climate change, and to reduce other environmental and health impacts from industrial activities.

The Society for Social Studies of Science members also include government and industry officials concerned with research and development as well as science and technology policy; scientists and engineers who wish to better understand the social embeddedness of their professional practice; and citizens concerned about the impact of science and technology in their lives.

The history of science and technology examines how humanity’s understanding of science and technology has changed over the centuries. For example, innovation and development medical instruments; nuclear technology, radar system, etc. Social sciences , which study human behavior and societies.

Technology

The history of science as knowledge dates back from ancient times when natural philosophers such as Thales of Miletus and Democritus would observe and theorize about the occurrences in the natural world.

We live in a highly sophisticated world where everything is almost achievable. As part of our ongoing improvement efforts, we conduct a systematic peer review process at our regional science centers and national Office of Science and Technology to improve integration, identify best practices, and share successes and challenges within our science enterprise.

Our department includes lively undergraduate and graduate programs, and postgraduate training for science and technology journalists. Dr. Cynthia Breazeal is an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she founded and directs the Personal Robots Group at the Media Lab.

Science Technology & Society

With the subject of immigration reform being a hot topic in Washington, there has been much talk of expanding the opportunities for graduates with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (“STEM”) to obtain a green card. In human society, it is a consequence of science and engineering, although several technological advances predate the two concepts. As such knowledge is produced by the scientific method through empirical verification – using empirical data and observations to confirm the truth or rational justification of a hypothesis.

Science contributes to technology in at least six ways: (1) new knowledge which serves as a direct source of ideas for new technological possibilities; (2) source of tools and techniques for more efficient engineering design and a knowledge base for evaluation of feasibility of designs; (3) research instrumentation, laboratory techniques and analytical methods used in research that eventually find their way into design or industrial practices, often through intermediate disciplines; (4) practice of research as a source for development and assimilation of new human skills and capabilities eventually useful for technology; (5) creation of a knowledge base that becomes increasingly important in the assessment of technology in terms of its wider social and environmental impacts; (6) knowledge base that enables more efficient strategies of applied research, development, and refinement of new technologies.

The STS Program at Brown University brings together faculty and students who are interested in the construction, operation, and dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge. Exhibit the development of specific skills related to the science, technology, health and society disciplines, particularly the use of math and science to solve problems in concentrations such as health, natural resource use and conservation, sustainability, information science, and engineering.
